The Alcoa Works Committee in Avilés announced this morning that between the next 13 and 24 days will march to the capital to save their jobs. One day after they officially know the names of those interested in the Alcoa aluminum factories in Avilés (Asturias) and La Coruña (Galicia), the representatives of the 623 workers affected by the Employment Regulation File (ERE) of both facilities have indicated in a press conference that «we want binding offers and, in relation to these offers, to choose the one that suits us best».
So far it has transpired that there are six interested companies, Liberty House and Quantum funds, and the industrial groups Aludium, Cunext, Riesgo and Glencore. Tomorrow, the follow-up meeting of the ERE between the workers and the company – which coincides with a similar meeting at the European level – is held, after which it should be known who presents firm offers.
With the intention of putting pressure on the negotiations and finding a solution, the Works Committee, made up of representatives from CCOO, UGT-Fica and USO, has announced an «aluminum march» from Avilés to Madrid, appealing to the entire Autonomous Community : «Alcoa is the first piece, it is a march for the Asturian industry».
The deadline agreed between Alcoa and the unions to reach an agreement with one or more buyers of the two factories of the company is next June 30.
